The “Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review” in Cairo
26 Egyptian CSOs from all over the republic established the “Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review”, the sole official coalition to be working on the Universal Periodic Review.
Where the coalition was established based on a call launched by Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights in the frame work of the “Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Enhance Public Policy During the Transitional Period” project, which is implemented by MAAT and funded by the European Union during 2016-2017.
The two-days meeting presented MAAT’s accomplishments in the international mechanisms to protect human rights file via a short movie summarizing the Foundation efforts’ since 2009 especially in the universal periodic review as a relatively new mechanism of the international mechanisms to protect human rights (https://goo.gl/HmtkRt(.
As well as discussing and adopting the coalition bylaws including a set of fundamental information on the coalition’s nature and objectives, membership terms and patterns, and the coalition’s management which would take the lead to achieve the coalition objectives, the meeting was concluded by the election of the board of trustees composing:
1) Women and Development Association in Alexandria, as the head of the board of trustees,
2) Partners for Transparency Foundation in Cairo, as the vice chairman of the board of trustees,
3) Justice Foundation for Development and Human Rights in Sohag, as a board of trustees member,
4) Will and Challenge Association for Persons with Disability in North Sinai, as a board of trustees member,
5) All People Association for Development and Human Rights in Assiut, as a board of trustees member.
MAAT for Peace, Development and Human Rights was assigned as the coalition’s general secretariat.
The coalition, composing 26 NGO as founder members seeks to build a permanent and sustainable foundation, to observe the government action on the local level especially related to Egypt’s voluntary obligations in front of the UPR, raises the institutional capacity of the member organizations in the coalition, implements a range of activities to expand the community awareness of the UPR, communicates with the policy makers to adopt policies consistent with Egypt’s voluntary obligations in front of the UPR, and publishes reports related to human rights to participate in Egypt UPR session t in 2018 .
Noting that the “Universal Periodic Review as a tool to enhance public policy during the transitional period” project seeks to strengthen the role of the Universal Periodic Review to enhance public policies and reform human rights during the transitional period in Egypt through involving civil society organizations, activists and media figures effectively in observing, inviting to an essential reform for Human Rights and adopting new policies in line with international human rights standards based on the Universal periodic review in 2014.
Project activities include all governorates of the Republic, target those who work in the civil society organizations, members of the Egyptian parliament, internet activists, bloggers, journalists, policy makers, legislators, and society as a whole.
