Maat condemns the barbaric act against the Egyptian old lady
The State should take legislative and procedural steps which suits the constitutional and international obligations
Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights expresses deep condemnation of the barbaric act of irresponsible group in Minia Governorate in Egypt toward the elderly woman on the background of the rumors stating the discovery of an illicit relationship between the son of the victim and a woman from the family of the perpetrators
The Foundation stresses that it is unacceptable ethically or legally to exercise violence against the elderly woman no matter what are the justifications and reasons, also warns of the danger of the shallow consideration and minimization of the impact of these events as the state should be present with authority and power in such situations to punish the offender and protect the rights of the victim
Maat affirms that the law must control the situation in such incidents thus it calls upon law enforcement authorities and public prosecution to take quick actions in order to bring perpetrators to justice to receive a deterrent punishment because of their actions that violate the law , establish sectarian strife ,undermine social peace ,and contradict the most basic principles of humanity.
Maat also refers to the need of taking effective legislative and procedural steps in the near future in order to ensure that such practices ,which are against the principles of citizenship ,will not be repeated again, to enhance the value of respect for the law ,and to stop sedition from the beginning that is through implementing the provisions of the Egyptian Constitution and commitment to Egypt’s international obligations , especially its commitments to the UPR mechanism in which Egypt accepted several recommendations related to the promotion of religious tolerance.
