MAAT Foundation and Shabab ElSharkia Association conduct the second UPR meeting for the College of Arts, Zagazig University

Okeil: the UPR is a mechanism to support the state fulfillment to its obligations

Shabab Alsharkia Association with the attendance of MAAT for Peace, Development and Human Rights conducted the second UPR meeting for the students of the College of Arts, Zagazig University.

The meeting comes in the context of the activities implemented by “the Egyptian Civil Society Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review”, to increase the youth awareness of human rights concepts and the universal periodic review, and out of the coalition’s keenness to increase the youth awareness and capacity all over the republic of the UPR as a global mechanism ensuring human rights advance.

The meeting emphasized on the fact that the UPR is basically aiming at supporting the governments to fulfill their international commitments and obligations, which is the assumed role by the member organizations in the coalition via a group of community awareness activities of the international mechanisms.

The participants in the seminar were mostly interested in education and employment, along with how to utilize the UPR recommendations in improving he human rights situation and providing public services for citizens in the governorates.

Its worth mentioning that the Coalition, composing 229 Egyptian NGOs was established in the framework of the“Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Enhance Public Policy During the Transitional Period” project,seeking to promote the UPR role to advance public policy and reform human rights I Egypt via engaging CSOs, media figures and activists in human rights reform, along with adopting new public policies consistent with the international standards for human rights based on the 2014 UPR results.
