Are the most significant issues discussed during the most recent meeting for the project’s Steering Committee
The fourth meeting for the Steering Committee of the “Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Enhance Public Policy” project, implemented by the Foundation and funded by the European Union during 2016-2017, on Saturday, 1st of April 2017, in Cairo.
During the meeting, the project accomplishments since the committee’s third meeting in November 2016 were presented, where the most significant successes of the project represented in MAAT’s success in the participation of the Coalition in the 34th session of the human rights council in Geneva between 19-25 March 2017, including the Coalition’s organization to a group of activities including the submission of written and oral statements on some important issues such as the promotion of technical support offered by the OHCHR to the member states, along with the implementation of meetings with the OHCHR officials, permanent missions and international organizations, to be completed with a side event to announce the Coalition’s mid-term assessment report on Egypt’s progress in the implementation of the second UPR cycle recommendations.
The Steering Committee composing civil work leaders, media and online activists, MPs aims at ensuring access to all the target groups, along with promoting cooperation between the project and concerned parties to guarantee the achievement of the project results.
During its quarterly meetings, the SC stands on the progress of the project activities, along with offering proposals and recommendations concerning the activities implementation, thus, contributing to regular revision, as well as guaranteeing the beneficiaries and stakeholders involvement in the project’s efforts including the candidature of participants in the coalition members activities.
The fourth meeting of the SC recommended the organization of a press conference to announce the results of the Coalition’s visit to Geneva.
The “Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Enhance Public Policy” seeks to promote the role of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to enhance public policy and human rights reforms during the transitional period in Egypt via actively involving civil society organisations, activists and media operators in monitoring and advocating for necessary human rights reform and adopting new public policies consistent with the international standards on human rights based on the 2014 Universal Periodic Review.
