Maat’s intervention on restrictions on the right to education before the Human Rights Council

“The sanctity of schools is usurped by the Israeli occupation authorities.” Pasha said

In light of the continued violations committed by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people and the imposition of restrictions on the most fundamental right of Palestinians to a sustainable and secure education, Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights asserted, in an intervention before the Human Rights Council, that the announcement by the Israeli occupation authorities in early 2019 to withdraw UNRWA schools permits, which constitute 70.1%, is a mere continuation of the violations committed by the occupation authorities aimed at slow killing of the occupied Palestinian people.

In 2017 the occupation forces attacked more than 95 schools, as well as 80279 students and 4929 teachers and employees were attacked by the occupation forces, resulting in martyrdom, wounding, arrests, detention, house arrest and delays at checkpoints, in addition to unsafe access to schools.

Abdulrahman Pasha, a researcher at Maat, indicated that the Israeli occupation authorities have never hesitated to attack schools, whose sanctity is being usurped by them. Also, he called for the need for pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to renege on withdrawing UNRWA schools permits and to stop the attacks on students and teachers.

It is worth mentioning that Maat participates in the 41st session of the Council with an international delegation consisting of 26 members from 8 European and African countries: Egypt, Turkey, Italy, Switzerland, Latvia, Romania, Somalia and Kenya.
