Launching the activities of Peace-Makers Forum …
Maat cooperates with the North and South Center – Council of Europe implementing a project on “Promoting the role of youth in peace and security in the southern Mediterranean”.
The “Peace-Makers Forum”, organized by the Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, was launched, yesterday. It’s a five-days training program; from 21 to 25 December 2019, in the Arab Republic of Egypt in the capital “Cairo”.
The Peace Makers Forum comes within the framework of the project implemented by Maat on “Promoting the role of youth in peace and security in the southern Mediterranean”. This project funded by the initiative “Seed funding for grass root initiatives on youth engagement in peace and democratic processes in the Euro-Mediterranean region” promoted by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe in the framework of the South Programme III which funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe.
(12) young people representing some of youth NGOs in the project’s four targeted-countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt) are participating in the forum. The program tackles a number of different issues related to peace and security such as the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and UN Security Council Resolution 2250, in addition to discussing other issues like how to strengthen cultural dialogue and peaceful coexistence, as well as raising the youth skills to hold grass-root initiatives promoting the culture of peace for the most marginalized and vulnerable groups and to strengthen their capacities to prepare counter-narrative of hate speech campaigns.
The forum has started with a number of general and specialized sessions discussing concepts as extremism, terrorism and radicalism, and workshops to raise the participants’ awareness on the push factors of extremism “the factors that pushing youth to be extremists” and how to combat them. As well as completing the arrangement procedures to hold a number of roundtables between the youth participants, a number of decision-makers, parliamentarians and government officials in the targeted countries during the coming forum days.
