The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights held a symposium on Tuesday entitled "Strategies to combat terrorism in light of the development of terrorist groups" on the sidelines of the 42nd session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva. Ayman Aqil, President of the Maat Foundation, Fakhri Al-Nasser, Secretary General of the Human Rights Commission of the German International Development and Peace Organization, and Samira Abe, a member of the Peace Makers Forum of the International Peace Alliance in Geneva, participated in the seminar, and the seminar was moderated by Sherif Abdel-Hamid, Director of the Studies and Research Unit of the Maat Foundation.

Ayman Aqil, President of Maat Foundation, said that during recent years terrorism has witnessed a great development, as it is developing faster than the development of tools to confront it. Therefore, strategies to confront terrorism and extremism must be developed with more ideas outside the box and with the support of all the forces of society, especially civil society. During the symposium, Aqil said that the year 2019 witnessed 1,334 terrorist attacks, which left behind nearly 6 thousand deaths. The largest and most brutal share of the terrorist organization (ISIS), with 308 attacks, resulted in 1259 deaths.

For his part, Counselor Fakhri Al-Nasser, the international arbitrator, said that terrorism is the product of a state of extremism that was caused by the failure to develop religious or political discourses that transformed into extremist ideas that could be confronted with the intellectual, social, cultural and artistic tools of civil society. This is the responsibility that the elite in any country bears, which is to lead the enlightenment process. And building awareness, especially in the post-major political period or in times of major challenges. Being considered at the forefront of the soft power of any country, in defense of its national interest, within the framework of building its national security.

Samira Abe spoke about the situation in Somalia, which is witnessing terrorist operations launched by the Mujahideen Youth Movement, and said during the current year the movement has carried out more than 45 attacks that have killed more than 260 people. Samira also said that by referring to the various causes of terrorism, we find that ignorance is one of the most important causes, and that the terrorist act is mainly due to extremist ideology based on ignorance and slogans that politicize religion and non-traditional formulas that develop aggressive tendencies among the recipient, and therefore the ideal confrontation is in investing in quality education. And sustainable development.

Sherif Abdel Hamid, Director of the Studies Unit at Maat Foundation, stressed that terrorist operations are no longer at the level of terrorist groups, but also individual incidents that have recently spread due to the increase in the ideas of the extreme right and populist ideas throughout the world, which made extremism in thought a popular commodity and hate speech spread, and it spread. With him are the extremist terrorist operations outside the responsibility of known terrorist groups.
