International human rights mechanisms in Africa

The international human rights mechanisms concern Africa. Among the non-contractual mechanisms most concerned are the 'Special Procedures'. Currently, there are five procedures that work directly on specific African countries, out of 12 country states that already exist, and they are:

  1. Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Central African Republic.
  2. The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea.
  3. Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Mali.
  4. Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia.
  5. Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in the Sudan.

Notably, Special Procedures representatives are independent human rights experts with mandates to provide reports and advice on human rights from a thematic or country-specific perspective, to cover civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights.
