Human trafficking in Libya: a new market that increases migrant suffering

The Military Intelligence Unit of the Libyan Army spotted a market for buying and selling illegal immigrants in a desert area belonging to the city of “Idri” in southwestern Libya, one of the main transit centers for migrants.

While the Libyan authorities are busy in the armed conflict around the capital, Tripoli, migrants continue to cross Libya's open and remote southern border, and this transnational crime has added to the instability the country has witnessed over the past decade.

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights recommends encouraging regional cross-border cooperation in conducting investigations and prosecutions. As well as activating the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its supplementary protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons, especially women and children.
