Special measures to protect human rights in Africa

The special rapporteurs are considered one of the special procedures for the protection of African human rights, which comes within the mechanism of work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples 'Rights, where the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights allows the commission to establish subsidiary mechanisms such as special rapporteurs, committees and working groups.

The committee defines the tasks and specializations of each subsidiary mechanism, whether special rapporteurs or working groups, which become responsible for submitting a report on its work in every regular session held by the committee.

12 thematic mandates of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights were created to facilitate its work throughout the African continent, and they are: (from the oldest to the most recent)

1. Special Rapporteur on prisons and conditions of detention (1996)
2. Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women (1999)
3. Working Group on Indigenous People in Africa (2000)
4. Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and access to information (2004)
5. The Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders (2004)
6. Special Rapporteur on refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons and migrants in Africa (2004)
7. Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa (2004)
8. Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (2004)
9. Working Group on the death penalty, extrajudicial or arbitrary executions and enforced disappearances in Africa (2005)
10. Working Group on the Rights of Older Persons and People with Disabilities (2007)
11. Working Group on Extractive Industries, the Environment and Human Rights Violations (2009)
12. Committee to protect the rights of people living with HIV and persons exposed to and affected by HIV. (2010)
