Today, the International Alliance for Peace and Development in Geneva, in cooperation with the Maat Foundation and the International Consulting Group, started the activities of the training week for the universal periodic review mechanism, which lasts for a week, in Geneva, Switzerland, on the sidelines of the 34th session of the universal periodic review mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The training, in which a group of experts is participating, headed by Ambassador Mushira Khattab, former Minister of State for Family and Population, and Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, aims to train a number of Arab, European and African youth on how to conduct the universal periodic review mechanism, and the objectives of this process, as well as the documents presented during this the operation.

The training includes theoretical sessions in which the UPR mechanism is explained, which takes place through a constructive interactive dialogue based on three official reports, namely the national report submitted by the state, the report of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the stakeholder report, and a team participates in this dialogue with the country being reviewed. The work, which consists of 47 states, are members of the United Nations Human Rights Council, and the review is managed and facilitated by a tripartite team called the "Troika" consisting of three rapporteurs chosen by the member states of the Council.

The training also includes a practical part through which young people participate in review sessions and side events organized by civil society organizations, and this comes within the framework of the three institutions ’interest in training youth on the UN mechanisms concerned with human rights.

On the sidelines of the training, Ambassador Moushira Khattab said that the universal periodic review mechanism is one of the most recent mechanisms adopted by the United Nations in order to assess human rights situations in various parts of the world in order to improve the human rights situation in different countries without exception, once every five years.

For his part, Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, said that this mechanism provides a favorable opportunity for every country to disclose the measures it takes to improve the human rights situation in it and to overcome the obstacles and challenges facing ensuring human rights in it. This mechanism also provides an opportunity for the exchange of views and experiences to reach the most effective practices and policies in promoting respect for human rights in various parts of the world. And Maat Foundation has a long-term program to train young people on international mechanisms.

Ahmed Saeed, Executive Director of the International Alliance for Peace and Development confirmed that the coalition has partners in many countries, through which it seeks to host and train young people of different nationalities on international mechanisms concerned with protecting human rights, chief among them the universal periodic review mechanism, which provides an opportunity for constructive and interactive dialogue in which it participates.
