Partnerships to Promote International Arab Climate Action

Maat: We monitored prominent Arab and international partnerships to promote climate action during January
Okeil: We encourage Arab civil society to launch forums and events to discuss mechanisms to address climate change
Salah: We recommend Arab governments to share their pioneering experiences in partnerships and networking for climate action

During last January, many Arab countries entered into dozens of partnerships for climate action, bringing together the achievement of Goal 13 on climate action and Goal 17 on partnerships to achieve the goals. Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights releases its 13th issue of the SDG 13 Observatory in the Arab Region entitled "Partnerships to Promote International Arab Climate Action" in order to analyze the outstanding achievements made in the targets of the SDG 13 in the Arab region over the past month.

During January 2023, the Observatory monitored and analyzed the most achieved targets on integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies, and planning at the national level, as many partnerships for climate action were concluded within the framework of policies and strategies at the national level. Arab partnerships varied during the month between Arab-Arab partnerships, Arab-international companies, and Arab companies with international organizations for climate action.

Sudan is the country focus of the 13th issue of the Observatory, being one of the countries most affected by the phenomena of extreme climatic changes in the region. The data indicates that Sudan has lost huge areas of agricultural and pastoral lands due to desertification and the erosion of land productivity in rainy areas. There is no doubt that Sudan bears a great burden with regard to adopting policies and adaptive measures with the effects of climate change on various sectors, but the existing policies are not sufficient and require further development.

Commenting on the Observatory, Ayman Okeil, the international human rights expert and president of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, said that despite the pivotal importance of raising levels of climate awareness, the least achieved goals in the Arab region are those related to improving education, raising awareness, human and institutional capacities to mitigate climate change. Accordingly, Okeil recommended Arab governments to change educational curricula and raise awareness of climate change. Okeil also called on Arab civil society organizations to encourage the establishment of forums and workshops in order to give a greater opportunity to the various societal groups to propose solutions to the climate change crisis, and to submit those recommendations to the concerned decision-making authorities.

For her part, Maryam Salah, a researcher in the Sustainable Development Unit at Maat, said that in light of the partnerships that Arab governments undertake, Arab governments must share their successful experiences in Arab partnerships for climate action with other Arab countries, and recommended the governments of Arab countries to integrate technology with means of transportation and the use of bicycles.

It is noteworthy that the SDG 13 Observatory is a research periodical issued by Maat under the umbrella of the "Maat Platform for Climate Action". The Observatory was launched by Maat at the beginning of 2023, the platform aspires to enhance the work of civil society in the field of climate action, by launching studies and periodicals aimed at raising levels of climate awareness, in addition to organizing a series of training workshops and activities concerned with discussing mechanisms to address and combat climate change at all levels; national, regional and international.
