Help prevent the spread of jihadists in West Africa

After the African Union announced its intention to deploy 3 thousand soldiers in the Sahel region for a period of 6 months, to help prevent the spread of jihadists in West Africa, where terrorist attacks have increased in recent years, in cooperation with the Group of Five Sahel countries and the Economic Community of West African States.

In 2019, 4 thousand people were killed in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, five times greater than 2016, despite the presence of African, UN and international forces in the region..

It is worth noting that the group of Sahel countries was formed since 2014, based in Mauritania, and includes the countries of Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, in cooperation with France to enhance security and development cooperation between these countries. After the increase in attacks in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso in 2017, the Sahel group revived its project to form a joint force.

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights recommends that the African Peace and Security Council quickly define the deployment mechanisms and timetable for these forces. And make more efforts towards spreading moderate thought in those areas, which are a fertile environment for the further spread of extremist thought and action in the near and distant future.
