African Charter on Human Rights

Establishing the African Charter on Human Rights; The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, which began its work on 2 November 1987, with its headquarters in Banjul; Gambia.

The committee consists of 11 members elected by the AU Assembly from experts nominated by states. The charter defined the committee's mandate in Article 45 as:

A-       Promote human and peoples' rights: Through awareness-raising, public mobilization and information dissemination through seminars, symposia, conferences and missions.

B.   Protection of human and peoples' rights: By conducting correspondence and settling disputes amicably, state reporting (including consideration of shadow reports submitted by NGOs), urgent appeals and other activities of special rapporteurs, working groups and missions.

 

The committee held its last session in October 2019, which was the sixty-fifth regular session.
