The second training workshop for online media activists

Maat concludes its training program to enhance the role of electronic media activists in following up on the recommendations of the UPR

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights concluded its training program for online media activists with the second training workshop, which hosted 25 bloggers and electronic media activists, and it was held in Cairo, Thursday, 20 October 2016.

Target the training program entitled Enhancing the capacity of electronic media activists to report on the UPR,50 electronic media activists working on issues related to human rights through two training workshops that the Foundation implemented during August and October 2016, by providing electronic media activists with the necessary knowledge and skills that enable them to understand the system of human rights protection mechanisms in general and the universal periodic review mechanism in a comprehensive manner. In particular, the skills of implementing media campaigns and writing media reports for monitoring and following up the implementation of recommendations, in addition to enabling them to use the electronic platforms they manage to link human rights issues with Egypt's international obligations emanating from the UPR.

This comes within the framework of a project "The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition", It is implemented by Maat with funding from the European Union during 2016/2017, and includes an integrated package of training programs to build the capabilities of a diverse group of stakeholders and actors in the Egyptian society on the UPR.

The well-known media expert, Mr. Yasser Abdel Aziz, a member of the National Council for Human Rights, lectured in the training program, who during the interactive workshops focused on topics related to raising the participants' awareness of the concept of human rights, the emergence of the international bill of rights, the concept of international law, and a critical approach to the UN human rights concepts by owning Systems analysis capabilities through the quadruple analysis mechanism. In addition to increasing the participants' awareness of the UPR procedures and the results of Egypt's submission to it in 2010 and 2014, by focusing on enhancing the awareness of electronic media activists of the importance of the role that the new media plays, and the methods of practicing this role in relation to the mechanism, while enabling the participants to implement advocacy and advocacy campaigns on human rights issues. Through the training content that was developed to achieve the objectives of the training program, the trainer addressed the roles played by the new media and media, which is to shed light on and identify those responsible for violations and deficiencies in the commitment to human rights, raise human rights issues on the national agenda, provide a haven and a platform for complaints for the violator. Their rights, provide a mechanism for accountability and hold officials to account, and provide parliamentarians, councilors and supervisory bodies with information.

It is worth noting that the second workshop for the training of activists witnessed the presentation of good proposals from the participants regarding new applications to follow up on the recommendations of the review through electronic platforms, and various visions related to strengthening the role of activists in raising awareness of the periodic review as an important human rights mechanism for reform, which was shown by the working groups that were formed during the training. .
