The United States admits to killing civilians in Somalia, but more awaits

The United States admitted yesterday that it killed 2 civilians and wounded 3 in an airstrike in # Somalia, in February 2019, in a rare admission of civilian casualties as a result of the military operations of the American African Command "AFRICOM" in Somalia.
This is the second incident in which “# Africom” admits to killing civilians in Somalia, after an airstrike in April 2018 in the Albor region in central Somalia, in which 2 civilians were killed. All this while the # often accuses the United States of being withholding time from the true results of its operations.

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights considers AFRICOM's move to publish such reports on civilian casualties as a good step towards achieving transparency, but it is not sufficient. It should entail greater transparency in accountability and compensation procedures for the injured and the families of the victims. AFRICOM must respond to the remaining accusations against it of affecting most of its operations on civilians, in an unselective manner.
