Food insecurity in Sudan: a UN emergency warning

More than 9.6 million people, or nearly a quarter of Sudan's population, are severely food insecure and need emergency assistance. This figure has increased by 65% when compared to the same period (from June to September) last year, according to the report of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs “OCHA” in Sudan.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights recommends more international humanitarian support for the people of Sudan who are most vulnerable to food insecurity. It also stresses the need for the Sudanese government to expand its role in providing the umbrella of social protection to confront poverty linked to hunger, in order to alleviate this emergency situation, so that it does not turn into a disaster in the foreseeable future.
