27 years after the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty .. Maat: One-tenth of the world's population still lives in extreme poverty

Aqeel: There must be concerted international efforts to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

On this same day, October 17, 1987, a crowd of people gathered in Place Trocadere in Paris, expressing their misery due to extreme poverty, where Joseph Fresensky displayed his painting dedicated to honoring the victims of extreme poverty, and in 1992 the United Nations officially recognized him as a Day to Combat Extreme Poverty .

Maat Foundation stresses that despite the 27th anniversary of the United Nations' official recognition of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which became at the top of the sustainable development goals, there are still about 1.3 billion people suffering from multidimensional poverty, including 663 million children, and although the 2030 Agenda aims to reduce The proportion of people living in extreme poverty reached 2.5 % in 2030, but the 10% of the world's population still lives in extreme poverty, according to recent statistics.

In the latest report of the "Multidimensional Poverty Index" (IMP), which is one of the most prominent indicators to measure progress in the first goal of the sustainable development goals, which is poverty, the indicators indicated that about 76% of the world's population are still living in extreme poverty.

Statistics also indicate that the countries most prone to poverty are located in the continents of Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, as they are the regions most prone to conflict. Yemen is among five countries in Asia that suffer from hunger due to wars and conflicts. As a result of Houthi attacks and acts of violence and sabotage that lead to cutting off supplies, more than 80 1TTP1T of the Yemeni population live below the poverty line, and Yemen is expected to become the poorest country in the world by 2022 if The conflict that erupted five years ago has not stopped and continues today.

For Africa; South Sudan ranks first in poverty within the continent, where the poverty rate reaches 91.9%, while Somalia ranks seventh due to the spread of armed conflict in it, and the concentration of terrorist groups, on top of which is Al-Shabab Movement, in addition to external interventions, especially the hidden Qatari forces there.

Despite international efforts to reduce poverty, rates are still increasing, especially due to the spread of conflict in many African and Asian countries and the failure of international efforts to achieve acceptable success rates to achieve the first goal of the sustainable development goals at least. It is worth noting that the eradication of extreme poverty requires a great stride of achievements in other related goals, such as the eradication of hunger, the attainment of high levels of health and education, in addition to the necessity of working to achieve the sixteenth goal of establishing peace, especially in conflict countries.

Therefore, Maat Foundation recommends the necessity of concerting all international efforts to reduce extreme poverty and work to achieve tangible achievements in the 2030 sustainable development agenda. And to reduce the number of civilian victims who die of starvation, especially in conflict areas in Africa and Asia.

It is worth noting that Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights currently holds the position of North Africa Coordinator in the group of major NGOs in Africa, as well as a member of the General Assembly of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union.
