Maat Decries the Eritrean Army's Vicious Attack on Refugee Camps in Neighboring Ethiopia

Maat for Peace, Development, and Human Rights decries the Eritrean army's vicious attack on refugee camps in neighboring Ethiopia, where they kidnapped a number of Eritrean asylum seekers.

The Shimelba and Hitsats refugee camps in northern Ethiopia were home to more than 25,000 Eritrean refugees. However, they were vandalized and destroyed by the attacks carried out by Eritrean and Ethiopian forces between November and last January.

In Shimelba camp, a World Food Program storage facility and a high school run by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's Development & Inter‐Church Aid Committee were burned down, whereas in Hitsats camp, at least 14 facilities were already burned down, and 55 more were damaged or destroyed by January 5, and new fires were ignited by January 8th.

All such heinous practices are inconsistent with the international human rights laws and the 1951 Refugee Convention, which provide for the provision of support and assistance rather than expulsion, arson, and death!
