Seminar for Maat reveals Sanitation... Is unfulfilled duty of Ayat

An administrative region with its towns and villages deprived of safe sanitation, and still the populations who their numbering quarter of a million people depend on traditional methods (Orchards) in disposal of wastewater. This is discussed in second seminar was held by Maat for peace, development and human rights in Almtanya village, Ayat province on Monday, 15th August 2011, in framework of activities of "Improving economic and social rights" Empowerment ", project funded by French institute in Cairo. Project seeks to provide community-based mechanisms to enable citizens to access their rights regarding clear drinking water and safe sanitation services, by adopting rights-based approach, qualifying influential community-based stakeholders and confirming this approach during their participation in local decision-making. Seminar began with an explanation of legal standards for clean drinking water and safe sanitation, and sent by Committee on Economic and Social rights of United Nations in official documents and considered a measure of realization of right to water in a given society. These are criteria of availability of water supply per person: the first is sufficient and continuous, and the second criterion is validity, where water should be free of all that is harmful and threatened health of persons. The third criterion is possibility of access to water, without incurring hardship or travel long distances, while the fourth criterion is economic ability to reach water, in the sense that everyone should be able to afford costs of water facilities and services. In second part of seminar, a public debate was opened with participants about problems of drinking water and sanitation at Al-Ayat, as participants pointed to a number of important problems. The most important is deprivation of all regions of Al-Ayat of santation services, as the only project that began implemented in the city of Al-Ayat stopped due to lack of funding. As well as, villages that were included in plans of Ministry of Housing, their projects did not start despite assignment of projects to various construction companies for some time. Although people of Almtanya village stated that they are connected to clean drinking water in month of July only, but some participants called for the need to change lines of the same network because it of asbestos, which caused serious damage to human health. The official of drinking water and sanitation said that part of the network was replaced but there are already 30% of network tubes are still full of asbestos. Away from Almtanya village, there are a number of villages still rely on artesian wells in access to water, which constitutes a major threat to human health. Maat will include all problems raised in seminar in the report about human rights situation related to drinking water and sanitation in Giza governorate, which will be issued in the coming days and will be submitted to decision-makers, officials, media and mechanisms for protecting human rights.
