A new study of Maat reveals that politics imposes itself on the blogosphere in Egypt

The number of Internet users in Egypt exceeds the barrier of 15 million people, which creates an increasing and growing importance of the electronic space as a space that can be used in awareness-raising, mobilization, information dissemination and communication between this broad and influential sector of citizens, and from here the various forms of electronic publishing acquire their vitality that pushes the various community parties to employ them. And work through it, despite this, the forms of electronic publishing in general and blogs in particular remain far from the systematic and scientific study aimed at continuous evaluation of them, correcting their course, and enhancing their role in various development fields. 

From here, the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights prepared a study entitled “Blogs are new windows for participation and change, an analytical study of the content of a sample of Egyptian blogs during the year 2009”. The study dealt with a content analysis of a number 30 A sample blog for the blogging community; Which represents an important area, especially as it is considered one of the new media and one of the most important interactive Internet applications. Internet users resort to it to spread information and discuss societal issues in light of the social and political movement in recent years.

The content analysis methodology was based on a number of criteria, including the density of publication per month, the number of posts in each blog separately, in addition to the technical forms in writing (news - article - topic - video), and the standard of writing in each blog, which was classified into topics (human rights). Political - media - general), as well as the writing direction of the blogger between positive, negative and neutral .. And other violations of writing towards persons or institutions in the body of the published posts.

The study aimed to identify the trends of the blogs under study by analyzing the forms and contents of the various blogs, and to identify the extent of the prevalence of blogs concerned with civic and political participation among young people. It also aimed to monitor the artistic forms of blogging, in addition to the extent to which credibility and standardization are followed in writing.

The study concluded a number of important results, such as the severe disparities in publishing density between blogs and each other, which reached at their highest levels 310 Post per year, and the fewest number 6 Entries per year. The study also revealed that political posts ranked first, followed by human rights blogs, and media posts. This implies that participation through the virtual world in Egypt has a political and human rights character. Egyptian youth use their “blogs” pages as a forum for discussing political and human rights issues.

The study recommended the need for civil society organizations and bloggers to cooperate to build bridges of joint cooperation in order to mobilize, mobilize and launch electronic campaigns on many public issues, in addition to the necessity for civil society organizations to provide the necessary training to develop the skills of bloggers, and to improve the blogging climate and popular press.
