the background:

Project aims The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition In order to effectively involve media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights in Egypt, and in order to achieve this goal, the project will implement an integrated program to build media professionals' capacity to cover the UPR media. With the aim of improving the quality of media reports that address human rights issues and increasing media coverage about the universal periodic review.

The project will also network between media professionals and local civil society organizations who have benefited from the project’s trainings with the aim of increasing media coverage of human rights issues at the local level and linking them to recommendations accepted by Egypt during the second session of the review in 2014. In addition to using the universal periodic review application for smartphones that was specially developed. For media professionals with the aim of informing and updating them of news during the UPR follow-up period.

The training program consists of 8 training workshops for media professionals working on covering topics related to human rights at the level of the Arab Republic of Egypt in two phases, with two training workshops in each of the regions targeted in the project, each training workshop lasting for two days. The first phase of the training program will be held during the months of May and September 2016, with the second phase taking place between November 2016 and February 2017: -

Project "The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition":

A project implemented by Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights with funding from the European Union over the course of 2016-2017, within the framework of the Foundation's work plan to follow up the results of Egypt's submission to the universal periodic review mechanism and to strengthen communication between Egyptian stakeholders and international mechanisms for the protection of human rights in general. The project is implemented in various The territories of the Arab Republic of Egypt according to the table shown above.

The project targets a group of stakeholders who have positive attitudes and a desire to learn and engage in activities to follow up Egypt's obligations in the field of human rights, especially media professionals, electronic media activists, and local civil society organizations.

The project seeks to strengthen the role of the universal periodic review to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt, by actively involving civil society organizations, activists, and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights, as well as by calling for the adoption of new policies compatible with standards. Media Training Program:

The training targets 100 media professionals working on issues related to human rights from all governorates of the Republic, through 8 training workshops divided into two phases, each phase includes four training workshops at the rate of one workshop for 25 participants in each of the targeted regions, so that each group participates In both stages of training.

The first group of four workshops is expected to be held between May - September 2016, with the second phase taking place between November 2016 and February 2017.

The training program seeks to provide media professionals with the necessary knowledge and skills that enable them to understand the system of human rights protection mechanisms in general and the universal periodic review mechanism in particular, in addition to providing them with the necessary knowledge related to improving public policies based on human rights standards and the state's obligations to the universal periodic review mechanism, and the implementation skills Media campaigns and writing media reports for monitoring and following up on the implementation of recommendations.

Candidates to attend the training program must be:

  • Media and journalists officially registered in the relevant unions (to whom the matter applies).
  • With at least 3 years of experience reporting on topics related to the promotion and protection of human rights.
  • Interested in learning about international mechanisms for the protection of human rights, especially the universal periodic review mechanism.
  • We are committed to participating in the entire training program, in its two training stages.
  • We are committed to carrying out the tasks assigned to them during the period between the two training phases and related to the publication of a number of topics related to the UPR recommendations that are a practical part of their training.

The Foundation will provide accommodation for the participants from the same region and outside the governorate in which the training workshop will be held. The Foundation will also take care of the transfers and meals of the participants during the training period.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion of the training program, including practical training between the first and second training phases, after the end of the second training course in January / February 2017.
