Project aims The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition In order to effectively involve media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights in Egypt, and in order to achieve this goal, the project implements an integrated program to build the capabilities of media professionals and electronic media activists on the media and electronic coverage of the UPR. With the aim of improving the quality of media and electronic reports that address human rights issues and increasing media coverage about the universal periodic review.

The project also networking between media professionals and electronic media activists on the one hand, and 60 local civil society organizations who have benefited from the project's training on the other hand, with the aim of increasing media coverage of human rights issues at the local level and linking them to recommendations accepted by Egypt during the second session of the review in 2014. In addition to empowering Media and electronic media activists to benefit from the UPR application for smartphones, which was specially developed for media professionals and electronic media activists in order to inform and update them with news related to the recommendations and sessions of the UPR during the follow-up period[1].[2]

The training program consists of two training workshops for electronic media activists working on covering human rights issues from Greater Cairo governorates and residents. Each training workshop lasts for one day. The two training workshops are expected to take place during August and September 2016 in Cairo.

Project "The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition":

A project implemented by Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights with funding from the European Union over the course of 2016-2017, within the framework of the Foundation's work plan to follow up the results of Egypt's submission to the universal periodic review mechanism and to strengthen communication between Egyptian stakeholders and international mechanisms for the protection of human rights in general. The project is implemented in various Territories of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The project targets a group of stakeholders who have positive attitudes and a desire to learn and engage in activities to follow up Egypt's obligations in the field of human rights, especially media professionals, electronic media activists, and local civil society organizations.

The project seeks to strengthen the role of the universal periodic review to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt, by actively involving civil society organizations, activists, and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights, as well as by calling for the adoption of new policies compatible with standards. Training Program for Electronic Media Activists:

The training targets 50 electronic media activists working on issues related to human rights from all governorates of the Republic, through two training workshops for 25 participants in each workshop.

It is expected that the two training workshops will be held in August and September 2016 in Cairo.

The training program seeks to provide electronic media activists with the necessary knowledge and skills that enable them to understand the system of human rights protection mechanisms in general and the universal periodic review mechanism in particular, as well as provide them with the necessary knowledge related to improving public policies based on human rights standards and the state's obligations to the universal periodic review mechanism. And the skills of implementing media campaigns and writing media reports for monitoring and following up on the implementation of recommendations. In addition to enabling the electronic media activists to use the electronic platforms that they manage to link human rights issues with Egypt's obligations as for the international mechanism.

Candidates to attend the training program must be:

  • Employees / managers of an electronic media, including (blogs, social media pages and websites such as Facebook and YouTube).
  • With at least 3 years of experience in online coverage of topics related to the promotion and protection of human rights.
  • Interested in learning about international mechanisms for the protection of human rights, especially the universal periodic review mechanism.
  • We are committed to implementing the tasks assigned to them after the end of the training and related to online coverage of a number of issues related to the recommendations of the UPR.

The Foundation will take care of the transportation and meals of the participants during the training period from the governorates of Greater Cairo or residents there, and the participants will also receive a certificate of completion of the program.

aFor the journalist Dr. Yasser Abdulaziz, Writer, trainer and consultant in the fields of communication and media, who worked as a consultant and trainer for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as provided training and consultations for a number of international organizations; These include: the United Nations Development Program (UNDB), “UNESCO”, “Reporters Without Borders”, the Dutch “Free Voice” Foundation, and the Trust Council.British AVI, "Inter News", the US Bureau of Transitional Initiatives, and a number of Arab governments. He worked as a consultant for the Cairo-based Al-Masry Al-Youm and Al-Watan newspapers, as well as training director for the Middle East News Agency, and provided training and consultations for Al-Madina, Al-Hayat, and Okaz newspapers in Saudi Arabia, and more than 20 organizations. Prominent Arab media personality. He trained hundreds of journalists, politicians, technocrats and diplomats in 16 Arab and foreign countries on journalistic work and ways to enhance communication activities.
