Clerics and Community Motivation to Support Prisoners' Families

Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights held the 8th roundtable to Muslim and Christian Clerics titled "The role of Religious leaders in motivating the community to help the prisoners' and detainees' families" in Dar El-Salam district on Sunday 19/01/2014. This meeting comes within the activities of the project of the integrated protection for the families of prisoners and detainees in the integration and rehabilitation funded by the Swiss Foundation Drosos aiming at providing direct aid and volunteer resource mobilization in the community and the guidance for families of prisoners. The meeting was carried out in the presence of (20) participants from Islamic and Christian religious leaders; the dialogue addressed psychological and social problems faced by the family of one prisoner jailed and society's perception of them and the problems arising from social and economic marginalization. Case studies were presented from reality of families and situations discussed at service center follow up for advice constantly; and to clarify the extent of the risks of the societal and economic pressures on the families that prevent human daily needs and human to be a positive active member of the community. Also the roundtable has tackled the subject from Islamic and Christian perspectives, and how to direct the religious discourse in achieving understanding and social solidarity among members of the community and these families to urge the community to support the families of prisoners and detainees and reintegration. There has been a large interaction between the attendance to express their opinions about these families and they shared what they will present from services, preaching and aid them. The meeting concluded that the community needs awareness guidance in how to embrace the families of the prisoners and the provision of jobs and small businesses to the families of prisoners from the churches services side. Also Virgin Mary Church representative offered to provide support to prisoners' families in Dar ElSalam district (in the fields of employment and education). Besides Islamic clerics has offered to provide workshops for training crafts men in the district for prisoners' and detainees' families. Finally Maat calls all society groups to adopt prisoners' families and their needs to get them back as effective families within the society.
