The human rights organization condemned the continuation of the conflict that caused the displacement of hundreds of thousands of refugees and displaced persons and it was beset by mass violations of international humanitarian law.

This have been Mentioned in a study launched by Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights entitled “After One Year of Tigray’s War, Will the Violations Stop!", which was issued by Maat for peace after the end of its participation in the special session on the situation in Tigray, which was held by the Human Rights Council of the United Nations on the civil war in Ethiopia, at the urgent request of the European Union. The session resulted in the decision to form an investigation committee of 3 international experts to investigate more widely the violations and crimes committed in the region.

Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights has monitored the facts of the civil war in Tigray and its implications since its outbreak on November 4, 2020, and its extension of flagrant human rights violations and retaliatory war crimes, in contravention of its international, regional and local human rights obligations to the extent that the Tigray region has been a scene of human rights violations at all political, civil, economic, social and cultural levels. The study reported various violations, including the right to life, gender-based violence, asylum, displacement, forced displacement, opinion, expression and housing, on human rights violations in this war-torn country, with the aim of defining responsibilities and preventing the humanitarian situation from worsening as much as possible.

Commenting on the study, Ayman Okeil, the international human rights expert and President of Maat, stated that the Ethiopian Government is engaged in systematic violations against civilians in Tigray. Okeil reiterated the Ethiopian Government's call for the cessation of the hysterical killing and torture that it has been pursuing for over a year, and recommended speeding up the ceasefire process and silence guns, as well as initiating a comprehensive national dialogue leading to a lasting solution to the internal conflict.

In the context of the study, Sayed Salah, a researcher at the African Affairs and Sustainable Development Unit at Maat, stated that due to the obstruction of humanitarian aid and food supplies by the Ethiopian government, this has caused the death of 200 children under the age of 5 due to starvation in 14 hospitals in the Tigray region. Reaching 33,000 children suffering from imminent death due to malnutrition has been hindered. Besides, 140,000 children were reported suffering from famine-like conditions. And he demanded the speedy removal of obstacles with the international humanitarian response and the facilitation of work procedures and cooperation with its workers.
