The lack of integration of international standards with national policies is the main challenge to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples

On the International Day of the Indigenous Peoples ... Maat confirms:

The lack of integration of international standards with national policies is the main challenge to respecting the rights of indigenous peoples

On the anniversary of the International Day of the Indigenous Peoples, which falls on the ninth of August of each year, she affirms Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights as Chairman of the Group of Major African Organizations Affiliated todid notHigh-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development; The need to join hands in order to activate international texts and strategic visions related to ensuring the preservation and development of the economic, social, cultural, heritage and political rights of indigenous peoples in various countries of the world, and their inclusion within the national and national policies and development plans.

Maat points out that although there are legal documents that acknowledge the rights of indigenous peoples, such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and although the United Nations Strategy for Sustainable Development 2030 has dealt with this matter in more than one place, it remains the main challenge in the problem of activating and observing these texts. And to ensure their integration into national strategies, policies and practices.

According to the Maat Foundation's monitoring of the status of many countries, development indicators express the extent of the deterioration of the situation of indigenous peoples compared to other groups in the countries in which they live, as indigenous peoples fall victim to discrimination in schools and exploitation in the labor market.

Hence, the Foundation believes that the problem goes beyond the mere existence of international standards. You have so far failed to protect them; Rather, the problem is in not implementing these standards, and putting them into practice. Accordingly, we affirm the need to take into consideration the mechanisms of activating international treaties, agreements and declarations, and to harmonize them with the 2030 sustainable development strategy, in order to achieve an appropriate climate. Free from racism, persecution and discrimination for these peoples.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation chairs the Great African Group. It is a grouping of all non-governmental organizations in the African continent, and it is one of the continental groups of the high-level political forum of the United Nations concerned with achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030. This group falls under one of the specific sectors, which is the NGO Committee. The group also works to unify the voice of African civil society to serve the sustainable development goals.
