Return of South Sudanese refugees: time to take responsibility

More than 11,000 refugees returned during the month of June, for reasons including the signing of the peace agreement between the government and opposition groups, the lack of humanitarian aid rations in refugee camps, and the spread of the Covid 19 virus in the countries to which they fled. They returned after taking informal crossings due to the border closure.

In some detail, about 5260 returned from refugee camps in the state of Uganda, while the number of returnees from Ethiopia reached about 1965, and other groups also returned from Sudan, and other groups who fled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Central Africa returned after the escalation of violence in them.

Looking back on the past few years, about 30,000 citizens have returned to the country from November 2017, and more than 180,000 refugees have returned to the country after the peace agreement between the government and the opposition was signed in October 2018, and more than 24,000 have returned to the country since the spread of the Coronavirus.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights believes that the time has come for the government in Southern Sudan to assume its responsibility towards the people of the country. The Foundation recommends that the government work to secure the voluntary return of these refugees, and work to provide a suitable environment for them after their return, in cooperation with international and regional bodies.
