The shutdown of the Internet in Ethiopia ... a return to past practices

The Ethiopian government continues to shut down the internet and phones in the west of the country in the "Oromia" region, from the beginning of January until today, under allegations of "security concerns", in conjunction with government military operations against the armed wing of the previously banned "Oromo Liberation Front".

This is not the time that the Ethiopian government cuts off the Internet under the leadership of "Abi Ahmed". Last year, Ethiopia was ranked second in the year 2019 among the countries that cut off Internet services, four times, for various reasons.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights believes that this procedure shows that the Ethiopian government is ready to return to using the same tools as the previous regime to deal with the problems, thus opening the door to the possibility of using the same tools to suppress freedoms of opinion and expression.
