On the International Day for Mine Awareness

Houthi militia mines claim Yemeni lives

Aqeel: Calls for international investigations and for those responsible for war crimes to be held accountable

On April 4 of each year, the world celebrates the International Day for Mine Risk Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. At a time when the United Nations and international organizations interested in mines call for the continuation of efforts to get rid of mines and stop their use during conflicts, the Houthi militia continues unabatedly to use mines. Which kills hundreds of Yemenis.

This global occasion comes and the Yemenis are still suffering from the problems of wars and their remnants of mines, missiles and dangerous missiles in many Yemeni governorates, and in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, the Houthi militia, which turned against legitimacy in 2014, is planting mines in a random manner in a large number of Yemeni governorates, After it obtained the state’s stockpile of mines, in the governorate of Hodeidah alone, they planted 37 minefields in 251 areas, which caused death to 329697 people. During 2018, mines killed 56 people, including 20 children and 8 women, and the number of injured reached 31, including 9 children.

On February 21, 2018, 6 people, all from one family, were killed as a result of a minefield extending between the two districts of Hais - Al-Jarahi, and the spread of mine rights caused the suspension and destruction of many industrial, commercial and government facilities. An official in the Yemeni army in Shabwa Governorate stated that mine action units have extracted more than 2000 mines in an area not exceeding 5 square kilometers.

In this context, Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights expresses its strong condemnation of the continued Houthi militia laying mines and committing crimes against humanity, and calls on the international community to urgently review its shameful stance in recent years, in addressing the violations committed by the Houthi militia against the right of the Yemeni people, and their failure to protect Civilians. Maat also calls for the need to conduct transparent international investigations to identify those responsible for war crimes by the Houthis, which are supported by the Iranian regime, and to ensure that those involved are not impunity.
