On International Women's Day .. Maat issues a report on domestic violence in Turkey

Aqil: The Turkish regime is responsible for the increase in domestic violence crimes within society

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights issued a report on domestic violence in Turkey, on the sidelines of International Women's Day, which falls on March 8 of each year, the day that the United Nations adopted in 1977 as International Women's Day in order to draw the world's attention to its issues, women. In spite of all the efforts made by the United Nations and its specialized agencies concerned with women, and governments and international and national organizations concerned with women's issues, violations of women are still the most widespread in the world, and impunity is the most common in relation to crimes against women.

The report emphasized that the regime in Turkey continues to commit more violations against women, as the government led by the "Justice and Development" party exploits its parliamentary majority to impose laws that violate women's rights. The report indicated that Erdogan's regime worked after the attempted coup in July 2016 to arrest thousands of people. Women, amounting to 18,000 women, all sectors of society included. The report indicated that many of these women are routinely subjected to torture and ill-treatment, which has even amounted to sexual assault.

The report added that women in general in Turkey face violence at alarming levels, including being killed and beaten, in addition to harassment, sexual assault and marginalization. During 2019, violence caused the death of more than 470 women, and the report indicated the failure of Turkish laws and legislation to address the phenomenon of domestic violence in Turkey.

For his part, Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, said that the different numbers indicate an increase in the number of victims of domestic violence in Turkey, as the Turkish Ministry of Interior stated that a total of 1,015,337 incidents of violence against women had occurred between 2014 and 2019, which resulted in the death of 1,890 women. In addition to the death of 94 under the protection system, Aqil added that during the year 2019 alone, more than 470 women were killed, including 319 women due to domestic violence crimes. Aqil pointed out that the dire situation of women's rights in Turkey is a result. The practices of the current regime, which views women with an inferior view, and this was evident in the statements of the Turkish president on more than one occasion that equality between men and women is not possible and that this is contrary to human instinct. The Turkish president also described women who are not mothers as "deficiencies." Before that, he had urged mothers to have at least three children, and considered birth control a "betrayal." This indicates the ruling policy mentality of Turkey towards women.
