Aqeel: Continued foreign interference in the African continent will make 2020 bloodier

On the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of Terrorism, the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights released its monthly report on the most prominent terrorist operations and counter-terrorism efforts on the African continent for the month of July 2020, to track the path of terrorist groups and come up with recommendations and assessments of the current and future security situation on the African continent.

The report dealt with the details of the most prominent of those operations that took place during the month of July, in each of the five regions of the continent, and that occurred in 15 African countries, with 54 terrorist attacks; It caused the deaths of at least 747 people, while Boko Haram was behind the largest number of victims, while Al-Shabaab was behind the largest number of terrorist operations this month.

The report stated that the most affected region is West Africa, which lost 324 victims, or 43.4% victims of the month, after 23 terrorist operations in 5 countries. Nigeria came as the country that suffered the most from terrorism this month, after 214 victims were killed after 10 terrorist operations. Somalia was subjected to the largest number of terrorist operations after the notable activity of Al-Shabaab movement, with 14 terrorist operations. While the State of Somalia came in the forefront of the countries that were able to bring down the largest number of terrorist elements, when 26 terrorist elements arrived.

Ayman Aqeel stated; The head of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, that the increase in terrorism in many countries of the African continent is directly due to external interference, especially from the countries of Qatar and Turkey, which violate international law by supporting armed militias, especially in Libya and Somalia.

The human rights expert warned of the repercussions of the continued mobilization of arms and mercenaries to the Libyan territories, despite all calls and international demands for a ceasefire and preventing the funding of militias or dealing with them.

Aqeel added that the International Day for Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism is an opportunity to warn against the continuation of such external interference; Which will make 2020 - which the African Union considered its slogan “Silencing the guns” - a bloody year in which the voices of the guns are not silenced until after the fall of the innocent.

It is worth noting that the continent of Africa comes within the interest of the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights, as it is a member of the General Assembly in the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, as well as the North Africa region coordinator in the group of major African NGOs affiliated to the high-level political forum of the United Nations.
