The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations special procedures, asking them to protect Ahmed Reza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish doctor in disaster medicine, who was arrested during his visit to Iran in April 2016 to participate in a series of workshops hosted by universities in Tehran And Shiraz, and the Iranian government charged with cooperating with hostile governments and acting against national security, including spying for Israel against Jalali, without any evidence indicating the latter's involvement in these illegal activities.

On October 21, 2017, Dr. Jalali was convicted and sentenced to death on charges of corruption on earth, after being detained for more than 7 months, and the Maat Foundation stated during the appeal that Dr. Jalali was subjected to torture and severe repression and was forced to forcibly confess to crimes he did not commit and during the latter's stay in prison his medical condition deteriorated. The Iranian government did not provide the necessary medical sponsorship for him. On December 2, the Iranian authorities transferred Jalali to solitary confinement, in preparation for the execution of the death sentence against him in the coming days.

For his part, Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, called on the Iranian authorities to stop the execution of the death penalty against the Iranian doctor Ahmed Reza Jalali, in light of his being subjected to a trial that lacks international standards for a fair trial, as Iranian courts, especially revolutionary courts, are not bound to provide fair trials, and confessions extracted are used Under torture as evidence in court. Aqeel added that Iran ranks second in the world after China in carrying out the death penalty, as it executed at least 251 people during 2019, and in 2018 the Iranian authorities executed 253, including 6 against people who were children when they committed their alleged crimes.

Muhammad Mukhtar, a researcher at the Maat Foundation, also condemned the Iranian authorities ’ignoring all international calls and appeals calling for a moratorium on the death penalty in the country. Execution for their participation in the protests.
