Maat publishes the first publication of its kind in Braille to educate the blind about the universal periodic review mechanism

Because knowledge of the UPR is a right for everyone

Maat publishes the first publication of its kind in Braille to educate the blind about the universal periodic review mechanism

Out of its keenness to adopt a responsive approach for all groups, especially “persons with disabilities,” and as part of its efforts to enhance community awareness of the universal periodic review mechanism and the voluntary pledges of the Egyptian state related to it, Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights issued the first awareness publication of its kind aimed at raising Blind awareness of the universal periodic review mechanism

The publication includes a simplified definition of human rights, in addition to simplified information about international mechanisms for the protection of human rights, a detailed explanation of the universal periodic review mechanism, and the basic recommendations that Egypt pledged to implement voluntarily during the second session of the UPR that was held in 2014, in addition to the role of citizens in helping the state to comply These voluntary pledges.

The publication, directed at the blind, seeks to integrate various groups of Egyptian society in advocacy and support efforts to implement the state's international voluntary pledges, in addition to enhancing knowledge of the UN mechanism established with the aim of improving human rights conditions around the world. Especially in light of the presence of a set of recommendations accepted by Egypt, focusing in particular on persons with disabilities, the most important of which are:

1) Recommendation No. 166-280, issued by the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which states “To continue supporting persons with disabilities to participate in the decision-making of their basic rights”,

2) Recommendation No. 166-281, issued by the Republic of Belarus, which stipulates “to continue creating conditions for the participation of persons with disabilities in public life in the country and in decision-making in matters related to the realization of their rights”.

The Foundation distributed the publication to the target group and made it available through a group of institutions targeting the blind mainly, including civil society organizations, specialized councils and universities nationwide.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation is currently implementing the "Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition" project, funded by the European Union over the course of 2016-2017. It seeks to mobilize all possible efforts to support the Egyptian state to fulfill its international obligations, especially the recommendations it accepted during the second session of the Review 2014, through an integrated package of capacity building activities, public awareness, and provision of alternatives to legislation and public policies.
