Maat Foundation draws the attention of the Human Rights Council to violations of the rights of religious and ethnic minorities in Ethiopia

Within the framework of its interest in the international mechanisms for the protection of human rights and participation in the circles of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights participated in the work of the resumed session of the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council, which was suspended on March 13 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus, and the work of the resumed session continues from 15 to 19 June at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. .

 On the first day of the agenda, Maat Foundation made two oral interventions, the first about the situation of minorities in Ethiopia, She drew the attention of the Council and its mechanisms to the frequent incidents of violence against religious minorities in Ethiopia, especially Muslims, the most recent of which was in December 2019, after the attacks on multiple mosques in the Amhara region, and the destruction of other properties in the town of Mota, north of Addis Ababa. In addition to targeting ethnic minorities, on February 17, 2020, the police in Ethiopia launched an attack on supporters of opposition parties in the Oromia region, killing one person, arresting and injuring dozens. In May 2020, Ethiopian security forces in the Oromia region killed 39 opposition supporters and arrested thousands more. Accordingly, the Maat Foundation recommended to the Council the necessity of securing the property and places of worship for Muslims in Ethiopia against the attacks that pursue them, and the investigation of what happened previously and the need for the Ethiopian security forces to stop dealing violently with the demonstrations carried out by the Oromo in particular.

During the agenda of item 6 of the agenda, the Maat Foundation gave its second oral intervention Concerning the universal periodic review of Egypt, where the Foundation for Women’s Affairs called on the Egyptian government to continue and intensify cooperation with international mechanisms for the protection of human rights and the commitment to implement its obligations and the necessity of joining all the international conventions on discrimination. In addition to its demand that the Egyptian government announce its strategy to improve the human rights situation in light of the recommendations that were approved and approved on March 12, 2020, that Egyptian civil society organizations should be part of this strategy.

The Maat Foundation directed its recommendations to the United Nations system in a general capacity, and the UPR is the only one in particular to provide support and assistance to the Egyptian government to fulfill its pledges and to the Egyptian civil society organizations to follow up on the fulfillment of these pledges.

Maat Foundation did not ignore the human rights conditions in occupied Palestine during the period Her intervention on the morning of June 16  It called on all international institutions, especially the United Nations, the international community, and all the free world to assume their responsibilities towards the Palestinian people, and immediate action to stop the ongoing daily crimes committed by Israel against the people of this people, and compel it to fulfill its obligations set forth in the resolutions of international legitimacy, and the importance of the exercise Continuous pressure on the occupation forces to release all Palestinian prisoners and detainees, and the necessity to enforce the relevant international law rules to limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation will continue its work tomorrow by participating in the urgent discussion on discriminatory practices, the use of violence by police personnel, and violence against peaceful protests after the tragic accident that led to the killing of George Floyd in the United States, and he called for the urgent discussion of the African Group at the Human Rights Council through Its coordinator is the permanent representative of Burkina Faso.
