What was the result of tribal violence in West Darfur, Sudan?

Clashes in El Geneina city since December 2019 have forced more than 16,000 people, most of them women and children, to flee the violence, cross the border and seek refuge in Chad.

Most of the refugees are staying in the open and in makeshift shelters, in dire need of shelter, food, water and basic health care, while the refugees are being moved away from the borders, for safety and protection reasons.

After these recent events, the total number of Sudanese refugees in Chad has reached 360,000.

The Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights recommends that the Sudanese government work to spread a culture of peace and community acceptance, reject tribal violence, and uphold the values of dialogue in places of tension. It also recommends establishing an observatory to predict such violent events, towards consolidating the sixteenth goal of the 2030 development and sustainable goals.
