“Salah”: We call on Arab countries to support emerging youth initiatives to reduce extreme climate phenomena

Last November, Egypt hosted the Climate Summit (COP 27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, to discuss countries' commitments to combating the threat of climate change. Within the framework of its keenness to promote sustainable societies that preserve human life, Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights released the 11th issue of the SDG 13 Observatory, entitled "Outcomes of the COP27 Summit: Arab National Initiatives to Combat Climate Change", which highlights one of the most prominent outputs of the World Summit, which is the national initiatives aimed at reducing climate change and its extreme phenomena.

"The Tunisian Republic" was the country focus of the 11th issue. During the conference, the Tunisian government confirmed its adoption of a national strategy for 2050 that is low-carbon and adaptive to climate change. It emphasized that the objectives of the Green Middle East initiative coincide with the strategic national objectives in Tunisia, and the involvement of the strategy to achieve mutual benefit and explore innovative financing opportunities within this initiative.

The report also monitored the most prominent good Arab practices and efforts that were made in terms of promoting climate action during November 2022, as the Egyptian government launched the Just Financing initiative, seeking fair financing for climate action, and to support efforts to respond quickly to the effects of extreme climatic phenomena. The initiative also provides investments and opportunities in sustainable projects that make a tangible impact in the most threatened societies.

For his part, Ayman Okeil, the international human rights expert and the President of Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights, expressed his hope to complete the Arab development efforts in the matter of climate action, and to face the challenges that impede their path in light of the effective participation of the governments of Arab countries in the 27th Climate Summit. Okeil called on the Arab governments to enhance their participation in the climate weeks of the next year, especially since the Middle East and North Africa Week will be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Okeil also reiterated his recommendation to the League of Arab States to enhance the work of the Committee on Addressing Climate Change, which works to identify opportunities and challenges facing Arab countries in order to address climate change, as well as work to prepare annual reports on the efforts and challenges of Arab countries, with the support of civil society organizations operating in this field.

Maryam Salah, a researcher at the Sustainable Development Unit at Maat, pointed out the importance of the role of youth in supporting climate action. Salah called on the governments of Arab countries to highlight the emerging youth initiatives with the aim of reducing the repercussions of climate change, and to support and implement these initiatives jointly with the youth who initiated these initiatives.
