Maat begins the procedures for preparing a strategic framework for improving and protecting human rights

In conjunction with International Human Rights Day, and against the background of the end of the presentation of Egypt's file to the UPR mechanism in November 2019, Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights hosted a “first high-level expert meeting” to discuss and launch the strategic framework for improving human rights conditions in Egypt in light of the review recommendations Universal League (2020-2024).

This comes in implementation of the pledge made by the Maat Foundation during its seminar, which was held on November 14, 2019, on the sidelines of the meetings of the universal periodic review mechanism that was held at the United Nations headquarters.

A select group of thinkers, public figures, human rights experts and parliamentarians participated in the meeting with the aim of reviewing and discussing the recommendations submitted to Egypt during the UPR session held at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on November 13, 2019, and discussing a draft strategic framework for improving and protecting human rights conditions, which is based on the recommendations made. For Egypt, and takes into account the opportunities, challenges, and constitutional, cultural, economic and social contexts.

The participants affirmed that consensus on preparing and implementing a national strategy to improve and protect human rights conditions in Egypt during the current stage rests with the government not only, but civil society forces, thought leaders, and parliament must play a pivotal role in this, so the Maat Foundation for Peace and Development And human rights seek to contribute to this by providing a participatory platform for all these parties, regardless of their political and ideological affiliations, in the context of a positive and constructive national dialogue process that is committed to realism, is ambitious, and is open to all concerned national institutions.

It is noteworthy that the meeting ended with the formation of a founding committee that includes a group of jurists, parliamentarians and public figures, they are (Dr. / Mushaireh Khattab, the human rights expert and the former Secretary General of the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, and Professor / Muhammad Anwar Sadat, President of the Reform and Development Party and the President of the Sadat Association for Development and Social Care and Dr. / Hossam Badrawi, founder of the Union Party, Professor / Jamal al-Sharif, Parliamentary MP and Lawyer of Cassation, Professor / Hani Hilal, lawyer and expert in childhood issues, Dr. Walaa Jad al-Karim, expert on social participation and head of the Partners Foundation for Transparency, Dr. / Imad Gad, Parliament Representative and expert at the Al-Ahram Center for Strategic Studies, and Dr. / Abdel-Hamid Kabash The expert in the rights of people with disabilities and Professor / Nahed Yousry, an expert on gender and development, a parliamentarian and a development expert / Manal Maher Al-Gamil and Professor / Magdi Helmy, a journalist and human rights expert, and Professor / Ayman Aqeel, the lawyer at the cassation and the head of the Maat for Peace Foundation)

 The committee is currently preparing the initial draft of the strategic framework, which will be presented for discussion through several consultative meetings. It is expected that the strategic framework will be issued in early January 2020.
