Maat appreciates the president's decision to ask Parliament to re-discuss the Associations Law

The president shares a vision of 900 NGOs that violate the constitution

We call on Parliament to conduct a real dialogue before amending the law

 

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights would like to thank President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for his response to the demands of civil society organizations to use his constitutional powers under Article 123 of the constitution to object to the proposal of the NGO Law, which was recently approved by Parliament and submitted to the President of the Republic for ratification and promulgation.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced at the end of the monthly youth conference yesterday to request the House of Representatives to re-discuss the law of NGOs in a manner consistent with the nature of their work and without prejudice to the constitution and national security considerations, after 900 Egyptian NGOs from various governorates and sectors coordinated among themselves and unified Their efforts and a formal appeal to the president to intervene to call on Parliament to amend the law submitted by him on the presidency

The Presidency was a good listener of the organizations ’appeal, and from the President’s speech yesterday, Saturday 10 December 2016, a broad understanding of the essential points that the organizations object to, and the President seemed to share with the organizations in their vision that some articles of the law contradict Article 75 of the Egyptian Constitution.

Egyptian NGOs are looking forward to the parliament conducting a real and wide dialogue on the draft law and taking the observations of the Presidency and those of civil organizations into consideration in order to balance the right of citizens to form associations and their freedom of work on the one hand and the state's right to monitor, organize and protect national security on the other hand.
