Maat Finalizes the Social Family Days for the Integration and Rehabilitation Project

In the framework of its implementation to the "Integrated Protection for the Families of Prisoners and Detainees-Integration and Rehabilitation", in cooperation with the Swiss Foundation Drosos. Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights finalized the Social Family Days gathering mother and children in the prisoners and detainees families. The project is implemented in six different areas in Cairo and Giza governorates including: Atfeeh, Maasra, Dar Elsalam and Basateen, Khalifa, Boulaq, and Imbaba. The Foundation implemented 9 entertainment social days for the target families by one day every 3 months to 2 of the target areas residents, 70 prisoners and detainees families in the project target areas benefited from the social family days. When the activity is considered one of the entertainment activities that seeks to gather mothers and children in the nature as an integration activity adopted by the project and aiming at strengthening the family bonds and boost their communication with the community. The social family days also seek to provide social and psychological support via three levels approach to offer social and psychological guidance, enable the family to spend positive time together outside the everyday routine, and also as an entertainment and educational component on the child rights. The social family day had a noticeable turnout of the project families, and the developed program by social workers and psychologists had very good responses and interaction from the families. The accuracy of the social family days program gave the opportunity for the families to be involved and active, express their educational problems with the children, exchange experiences between the families with facilitation by the psychological and educational sessions facilitators and lecturers. The program in its technical levels started with self esteem, adolescence characteristics, creative thinking skills, intelligence types, problem solving skills, and identifying the rights and responsibilities such as the right to development and the right to child protection. The program also offered a social interactive meeting via games, contests, paintings, working groups, and collective drawing exhibitions, which reflected a noticeable change in the children attitude between the first and last social family days. The positive changes included reduction in violence, personal cleanliness, opinion expression, solving children problems by personal intervention from mothers or by Maat Foundation such as referring medical cases to medical service providers, providing external books for the families children, and providing training, rehabilitation and job opportunities etc. The program included meetings between mothers and children to discuss each other's pros, mothers indicated the best behaviors and attitudes for their children and vice versa. This sough to boost their self esteem, increase the positivity and the affection between mothers and children. The most significant issues presented during the social family days were the families conflict and confuse between the children continuing their education or go out to work and support the family after the imprisonment of the family head and the difficult economic situation, and the most significant solutions proposed by the team with the social workers and lecturers included that Maat Foundation could provide educational assistance for their children including exemption of schools fees along with offering them free external books, clothes and tutoring. In addition to the possibility to teach the children how to make crafts during the summer and learning mothers tailoring skills and small projects management to overcome these obstacles. The trainers also referred to many examples for youth and students who are working beside their study. Finally, Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights calls all community groups to adopt the prisoners and detainees issue, and encourages common work to integrate the families and their productivity in the community.
