Maat concludes the largest and first of its kind training program for NGOs on the Universal Periodic Review

Maat for Peace, Development and Human Rights concluded its expanded training program for “Strengthening capabilities Cadres of civil society organizations to follow up on Egypt's obligations before the universal periodic review mechanism., In the tenth training workshop for the organizations of the Canal Region, Sinai and East Delta in the governorates of North Sinai, South Sinai, Suez, Ismailia, Port Said, Damietta, Sharkia.

He participated in the training program that was implemented between March - November 2016 and targeted all governorates of the Republic 75 Egyptian NGOs  176 cadres of civil society organizationsThrough 10 training workshops that were implemented in two phases, the training program built the capacity of civil society organizations' cadres on human rights, international human rights standards, the universal periodic review mechanism, the position of human rights in Egypt and the role of civil organizations in following up the implementation of the recommendations of the universal periodic review, NGOs' strategies that can be used to raise awareness of issues related to the review among the various beneficiaries, how to follow up and report on Egypt's international obligations, especially those related to the universal periodic review, by analyzing public policy and government actions, raising community awareness about local human rights situations and Egypt's commitments to international treaties, Campaigns for community advocacy and local follow-up regarding the review.

As part of their practical training, the training program succeeded in encouraging NGOs to implement more than 80 local activities to raise community awareness of the UPR, which varied between issuing media statements about the most pressing issues at the local level, radio and television interventions in the local media about local challenges and problems. Related to the review, the implementation of field visits to some informal areas and areas experiencing some human rights violations, a set of meetings with various stakeholders including local NGOs, local media people, grassroots and natural leaderships, in addition to a set of seminars, mini-trainings and grassroots conferences that were held Implementing them in the governorates with the aim of raising awareness of the UPR and linking it to human rights issues at the local level.

It is worth noting that the non-governmental organizations benefiting from the training program, which joined Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review, Which was established in May 2016 with the aim of ensuring unified awareness efforts of the UPR contributed to the formulation The first report on the follow-up to the recommendations of the second cycle of the UPR 2014 - Egypt It covered the period from January to August 2016, and is considered a practical training in writing reports on human rights situations.

The training program is one of the capacity building components of a project "The Universal Periodic Review as a Tool to Improve Public Policies during the Transition", Funded by the European Union and whose implementation continues throughout the years 2016-2017, the project seeks to strengthen the role of the universal periodic review to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt by actively engaging civil society organizations, activists and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of human rights And adopting new policies compatible with international human rights standards based on the 2014 universal periodic review.
