Maat issues the third report to evaluate the performance of the media

With the end of the electoral campaigning phase on the evening of May 23, 2014, and the electoral silence phase began, the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights issued through “Presidential Election Monitor - Egypt 2014” the third report to assess the performance of the media.

The report revealed an increase in the percentage of positivity in the Egyptian private and government media coverage of the electoral process and its parties. It also revealed the continued increase in the coverage area granted to candidate Abdel Fattah El-Sisi compared to candidate Hamdeen Sabahi in private news channels and websites.

The report also clarified the state-owned media’s commitment to impartiality to a remarkable degree and to seek to provide balanced spaces between the two competing parties over the electoral process, with a tendency to informative reporting in general rather than general terms.

On the other hand, the report revealed the continuing negative handling of the media affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood of the electoral process, with the excessive use of offensive language, insulting and defamatory language and exposure to the sanctity of private life, especially at the level of social media pages.
