Maat discusses the human rights situation in Eritrea in a meeting with the relevant expert

Geneva: 4 July 2018

 On the sidelines of her participation in the 38th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, an official delegation from the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights met with the Special Rapporteur for the State of Eritrea at the United Nations Mrs. “Shell-B Kytherias and her office staff, to discuss the human rights situation there and present the relevant vision of the Maat Foundation. And discuss opportunities for coordination and cooperation in this regard

Ayman Aqil, President of Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights stated that the Special Rapporteur was handed over the report prepared by the Foundation on her assessment of the human rights situation in the country, which is the report with which Maat Foundation participated in the work of the 38th session, specifically under Item 4 of the Council's work, entitled the report of the Special Rapporteur On the situation of human rights in Eritrea in accordance with the resolution  HRC 35/35)

Aqeel also indicated that Eritrea is witnessing multiple external interference in its affairs, and these interventions coincide with the Eritrean government's slowdown in easing restrictions on basic freedoms in the country, restrictions on activists and political opponents, and restrictions on peaceful protests, in addition to restrictions imposed on freedom of expression, association and political parties. He explained that all these matters were discussed with the Special Rapporteur.
