The 39th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva

10 Sep 2018,

On the sidelines of the interactive dialogue, the Maat Foundation partnered with the Special Rapporteur, Ms. Urmila Bhula, on contemporary forms of slavery. The Special Rapporteur submitted a report on her mission to Paraguay from 17 to 24 July 2017, where the rapporteur spoke about the positives taken by the government to eliminate slavery, especially child labor.

The European Union delegation participated in the interactive dialogue with a question about the paths taken by the international system to implement policies that concern the rights of workers and employers at the same time. The Egyptian delegation also participated and expressed its concern about migrant workers and the human rights violations to which they are exposed in the West.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights participated in the interactive dialogue with a written intervention on the forms of contemporary slavery, and the United Nations and its agencies recommended that the international community ensure that victims of contemporary slavery receive long-term assistance in order to help them recover and rebuild their lives.

It directed its recommendations to the government of Qatar to work on changing the Qatari sponsorship law to ensure that workers are allowed to leave the country freely, change their jobs, join trade unions, punish slavery by criminalizing it through clear provisions in the Penal Code, and re-define slavery in Qatari law to accommodate all practices that make human beings. Material commodity and the forms of his physical exploitation in forced labor are criminalized. In addition to providing national mechanisms to address contemporary forms of slavery.
