Maat on Chad's ethnic tensions: confronted decisively with respect for human rights

Aqeel: We must reject hate speech between groups and some of them

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights condemns the killing of at least 37 people, during three days of battles between farmers and herders in the valley region in eastern Chad, due to disputes over land and pastures.

Maat Foundation also strongly condemns the firing of government security forces that were sent to the region from ethnic groups, which calls for more resolute confrontation of these tensions. The Foundation also calls on government security forces to exercise restraint and take into account the rights of the most vulnerable groups.

Ayman Aqil, head of the Maat Foundation, stated: Ethnic conflicts do not open any way but to further tensions, from which neither side benefits. He added that there is a need to pursue dialogue between groups and some of them, and to reject hate speech and violent dialogue.

It is worth noting that the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights is concerned with African affairs in the context of being a member of the General Assembly in the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union, as well as assuming the position of North African Coordinator in the group of major NGOs in Africa. Affiliated to the United Nations High-Level Political Forum.
