In the wake of its founding meeting that took place on 23-24 May 2016, Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights held the first meeting of the Board of Trustees “Civil Society Organizations Coalition for the Universal Periodic Review”, Wednesday 25 May 2016.

The coalition, which consists of 27 non-governmental organizations of founding members, seeks to build a sustainable institution to follow up the implementation of Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review at the local level, to raise the institutional capacities of the member organizations of the alliance through the exchange of experiences, to implement a range of voluntary activities to increase community awareness of the universal periodic review. Communicating with policy makers to adopt public policies in line with Egypt's voluntary commitments to the universal periodic review, and issuing reports related to human rights to participate in the UPR sessions for Egypt.

During the meeting, the Women and Development Association in Alexandria was elected as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and the Partners Foundation for Transparency in Cairo was elected as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and next to the President and Vice President, the Board of Trustees of the Alliance includes in its membership: The Justice Foundation for Development and Human Rights in Sohag, Society Will and challenge for people with disabilities in North Sinai, All People Association for Development and Human Rights in Asyut, and the Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights assumes the functions of the General Secretariat of the Alliance.

The members of the Council commissioned the Partners Foundation for Transparency to draft the annual internal plan for the work of the coalition and present it to the council during the next few days. The council also discussed organizing a group of volunteer activities to enhance knowledge of the UPR in their governorates, provided that the first activity in North Sinai will start in cooperation With the Will and Challenge Association for People with Disabilities in North Sinai and with the participation of the members of the Council, where the members of the Council agreed to join the convoy of the Universal Periodic Review of North Sinai next August.

It is worth noting that the “Universal Periodic Review” project as a tool to improve public policies during the transitional phase seeks to enhance the role of the UPR to improve public policies and reform human rights during the transitional phase in Egypt by actively engaging civil society organizations, activists and media professionals in following up and advocating for the necessary reform of rights And adopting new policies compatible with international human rights standards, based on the 2014 universal periodic review.
