The Effective mechanisms to eliminate child labor in Egypt by 2025

Maat for Peace Association held a discussion and consultation seminar for journalists and the media today, Monday, August 16, 2021. This seminar came as a complementary effort within the series of activities carried out within the framework of the project to eliminate child labor in Egypt by 2025. The seminar included a group of journalists, researchers and media professionals from the Egyptian media, With the aim of raising awareness and highlighting the attention directed by the media towards a thorny and important issue such as the spread of child labor in Egypt.

Believing in the great role played by the media, and that was confirmed by Maat for Peace Association by addressing the important issues and highlighting them in detail to participate in the process of raising public awareness and occupying public opinion with the need to focus on combating such a phenomenon, Besides, the exchange of opinions and experiences by the main members of the discussion panel was a key and important factor to clarify as a summary of the phenomenon, and the extent of its spread in Egypt, in addition to introducing Alliance 8.7 as the most important international effort that gained attention in the recent period, due to the positive effects and effective activities that took place in the countries that are party to the Alliance, as it is an international participatory action to implement Goal 8.7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which is concerned with eliminating child labor by 2025.

Through mutual and effective discussions, it was pointed out by Monica Mina, the project manager for the elimination of child labor in Egypt, that the phenomenon of child labor causes a great danger not only to the child, but the damage is involved in many pillars and other areas, the speed of the spread of this phenomenon was clarified to reflect the extent of its seriousness, especially in the age group between 15-17 years, focusing on rural areas, where it reached 83% and in urban areas to 17%. In addition, Dr. Abdel-Fattah, professor of psychology at Menoufia University, and Amira Salem, head of the news sector in the Egyptian television, emphasized the important role of the media in addressing the phenomenon of child labor in Egypt and its contribution to popular awareness of the dangers of this phenomenon and the root causes and mechanisms to combat it through the exploitation of media arenas, In light of the discussions about the role of the media, the Egyptian researcher and journalist Bahaa Erian clarified the challenges that the media may face, which leads to an exacerbation of the phenomenon rather than a solution, These challenges vary, the most important of which are (the absence of media coverage of institutions concerned with children’s rights, the absence of regulatory controls on social media, the lack of clarity on copyright laws), One of the most important pillars that was discussed is the role of the private sector in eliminating the phenomenon and achieving the relevant goal. This was addressed by Sarah Benjamin, Vice President and Tarek Ishaq, President of ADMC, in addition to their keenness to choose the areas that the project will focus on targeting and work to analyze the root causes behind the phenomenon. It was emphasized that the reasons behind the spread of child labor differ in the different target areas due to the different surrounding factors and circumstances.

At the end of the discussion session, Ayman Okeil, head of Maat for Peace and Development Association, concluded with some proposals and recommendations that can be followed to raise awareness and knowledge of this phenomenon and the danger of its dimensions in Egypt and the need to cooperate with all relevant authorities, whether local or international, in order to achieve the relevant goal. One of the most important of these mechanisms is to hold and implement workshops and training courses to spread knowledge of this phenomenon and the importance of Alliance 8.7 and its positive impact, and to discuss the problematic of the necessity and importance of Egypt joining the Alliance.
