Intervention written on human rights in Eritrea

Concerning: the fourth item / interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea.

  Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights (Egypt) presents this intervention on the human rights situation in Eritrea during the previous period, which is witnessing several developments, at different levels, despite the breakthrough in its relationship with its regional and international environment, which resulted in:

  • Election of the United Nations General Assembly for Eritrea; Within eighteen countries, to join the Human Rights Council for a period of 3 years, starting from January 1, 2019. It obtained 160 votes out of 193 votes.
  • The UN Security Council resolution to lift the sanctions imposed on Eritrea, including the arms and travel embargo, freezing of assets and specific sanctions that the Council had imposed in previous resolutions. The Council announced the termination of the mandate of the Monitoring Group on Eritrea as of mid-December 2018.
