The workshop aimed at raising the awareness of media professionals and journalists of the issue of decentralization, its dimensions and its importance, as well as raising their capabilities to use their media tools in advocating for the issue of decentralization in Egypt. The training was based on the guide that was developed by the Wright Center for Consulting and Training entitled “The Role of Media Personnel in Promoting the Culture of Decentralization and Good Governance”. The proceedings of the workshop began on April 2, 2012 with an opening speech by Professor Ayman Aqil, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Maat Foundation, during which he introduced the institution, the issues it cares about and its contributions in the field of supporting good local governance. Then the project director spoke about the project, the workshop’s objectives and the workflow during it. The workshop included six sessions with three sessions each day, apart from the opening and closing sessions, where the first session dealt with an introduction to media and democracy, the second session dealt with the issue of good governance, and the third session dealt with the subject of evaluating the current local system in light of the concept of governance. As for the second day, the first session dealt with decentralization in its various dimensions, the second session dealt with the role of the media in promoting democracy, and the third session dealt with the role of the media in supporting decentralization. The analysis of the pre-post evaluation forms revealed to the participants a significant increase in their knowledge of decentralization and the role of the media in its dissemination. The workshop revealed the need to expand work with media and journalistic right workers with regard to advocacy activities and gain support for the implementation of decentralization in Egypt, given the pivotal role that the mass media, with its audio, read, visual, and electronic components, plays in advocacy and gaining support for reform issues.
