Aqeel, the Qatari government continues not to comply with international commitments

Human rights experts revealed that the Qatari government continues not to abide by its international obligations to protect and preserve the rights of workers, and experts emphasized that Qatar tried to “deceive the world” by issuing Law No. 21 of 2015, which Doha marketed to him as promoting the rights of migrant workers contrary to the truth, The new law kept basic elements in the old law that facilitate gross violations of human rights, including forced labor, as the worker must obtain a permit to leave the country, and it also permits the employer to prevent the worker from moving to another job for a period of up to five years, as well as Keeping his passport, which legally establishes the idea of exploitation at work by employers.

This came during the symposium organized by Maat at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, following the end of the session to review the country’s human rights record through the universal periodic review mechanism.

Ayman Aqil, President of Maat Foundation, stated that the seminar revealed that under Qatari laws individuals are often subjected to solitary confinement or isolation, and the use of torture methods that include beating and electrocution, as happened with the Filipino citizen “Ronaldo Lopez Olip” who upheld the Court of Cassation. In Qatar, on May 2, 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. He was charged with espionage, and his allegations of torture were not investigated.
