Terrorism is escalating in Central Africa

Terrorism continues to rise in Central Africa. At least 36 people were killed in Beni, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, after an attack by a militant group in the DRC.

Since October 2018, the "Beni region" in eastern Congo has witnessed a number of armed operations by the Congolese police to deter militant groups in the region. The recent armed attack, which took place in 4 villages in western Beni province, came at night in response to the attacks launched by the Congolese forces against the most prominent extremist groups there, the “Allied Democratic Forces,” a Ugandan militant group that has been stationed in eastern Congo since 1995.

In fact, that group has carried out many terrorist operations since 2014, but since October 30, 2019, those attacks have resulted in the deaths of about 200 civilians.

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Human Rights mourns the families of the victims and recommends the Congolese government to further tighten security measures for the settlement of peace in the region, in order to achieve tangible achievements that serve the implementation of Goal 16 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda related to peace, justice and strong institutions, as well as aspiration 4 of Africa's dream 2063 In a safe and stable Africa, which opens the door wide for the rest of the development goals.
